Chapter 1
June

Chirp: (common hockey term); to trash talk the opposing team

MY COWORKERS MUMBLE together as if deciding whether I’m a threat they should be wary of or a threat they should squash under the vehicle I’m working on. Even though I’ve stopped spending time in juvie and courtrooms, every unsolved crime in town somehow finds its way to my shoulders. It doesn’t matter that I’ve worked here off and on for months, it’s obvious no one trusts me except my boss who, ‘doesn’t have time’ for rumors if it interferes with getting a job done.

“How much longer on that oil change!” My boss yells over the sounds of the mechanic shop.

“Twenty!” I call back from under the truck.

I finish getting everything in place, shutting out my thoughts and focusing on my job. Once I refill the oil, I wipe my forearm across my brow and reach for a rag to take care of my hands. It disappears before I get my hands on it.

“June Woods. Who would have thought you’d been hiding here all this time?” Charlie’s voice makes me pause.

Slowly, my ex-boyfriend steps forward, holding up the rag. “Is this dirty thing the best you can get to take care of you now?”

“I don’t need to be taken care of,” I say sharply.

To prove it, I get a different rag. Charlie laughs with some of the guys, but none approach me. Charlie dated me for six months just to prove I ‘could be tamed’ when I was eighteen. It was around that time I learned that small towns don’t forget anything gossip-worthy, and rumors are as real as truth when whispered enough.

I knock on the door to the office, report that the oil change is done, and then get started on the next one. Charlie’s still there in jeans and a tank top. He gives me a thorough once over, taking in the blue jumpsuit I’ve rolled down and tied around my waist to reveal a black t-shirt.

Charlie steps forward after saying something to one of the guys. “Have you been a good girl and stayed out of trouble, June?”

“I’ll be as good as you are to me,” I barter slowly, remembering where I am. I can’t lose this job since it’s the highest-paying part-time gig I’ve got out of the four I do regularly.

“As if you could ever do more than pretend to be a good girl. I remember our relationship.” Charlie’s eyes shine dangerously. “All the very naughty things you wanted me to do when you weren’t out breaking the law.”

“Liar,” I hiss.

“Who is everyone going to believe?” he asks softly. “A good man who works hard and comes from a good family that’s still a family or someone who’s proven she’ll do anything for money?”

“You better hope karma reaches you before me,” I threaten.

Fear flits across his eyes. He glances back at some of the guys, and I notice the shop is silent.

“This is a mechanic shop, and I don’t hear anyone working. Am I missing a picnic?” My boss asks. Then he notices Charlie.
