Chapter 1

Naomi

My stockings have a run in them. Right there, on the left leg. Like someone’s gone and traced their hand along my thigh, and I can see them, the threads splitting one at a time, snapping like taut violin strings giving away to the soft cream skin beneath. Heat blooms in my face. I try tugging my skirt down. No use. I end up fidgeting with myself for too long. More than okay when you’re riding the bus.

The seat’s cold against my back. Even with the new bra, the button up, and the blazer on top, the cold still whispers at the nape of my neck. I didn’t want the new clothes. I would’ve been fine with my jeans and the one shirt that’s been washed. After all, no one else in my class has gotten this dressed up. The blonde who sits behind me in lecture, Brett, he told me his interview was a videocall.

“Doc won’t even know my pants are off” he’d said with this wink that looked to me more like a nervous tic. I don’t know. Jane called it flirting. I called it creepy. Jane said most pre-med guys are just like that. And I said, in my head of course, that that’s exactly why I don’t date any pre-med guys. Because they’re skeevy and awkward and talk just to hear their own voices. Plus, with Brett, my jealousy for him thumped through my skull like this awful second heartbeat. Him and every other guy in that class who gets to do their interview from the comfort of their couch, while I’ve stuffed myself into clothes that still smell like the store, just to have to ask to do mine.

I don’t know, maybe I should be more grateful.

I’m the only one who could go to their daddy and ask for help finding a doctor to interview. I know at least three classmates who had to do bribes for doctors while here I was getting it handed to me. Seriously.

The problem wasn’t what Doctor, but which.

Dad’s got so many friends to choose from. In the end I picked the one whose practice is closest to my apartment, and one who I knew wouldn’t be seeing Dad for golf that same Friday. I could hear Dad on the phone with Dr. Caine that evening. Saying stuff like “all grown up” and “go easy on her now” which made me feel like a little kid again. And now, all dressed up, riding the public bus, those feelings have cemented.

The clinic’s not so impressive from the outside. Red brick exterior. Glass doors. The directory at the front of the building says he shares this space with a chiropractor and a nail tech. I have to buzz myself in to the doctor’s office, where kids and their mother’s wait in small plastic chairs. I feel this tingle of self-consciousness behind my breastbone. I’m the only one here in such stiff dress. Even the secretary is on the more casual side of business casual.

She’s got this chilliness about her that makes me hesitant to approach the desk. Freckled skin and hair so blonde it’s practically silver. Her green eyes observe me with little interest, “yes?”

I find my voice, “I’m here to see Dr. Caine.”

“Appointment number?”

“What?”

“Your appointment number. For you or,” -her eyes rove the space behind me- “Your dependent? We take kids too.”

“I know that,” this comes out sharper than I mean it. “I’m here for
