Tears came to Jennifer’s eyes. The turmoil inside her raged. She could still feel her love for Adam, but she couldn’t try to reestablish what they once had. He had gone too far. Leaving her worrying day after day, wondering if he was okay, wondering if he was still alive. No, it was irreparable.

Sitting on her couch, she stared at the floor. His appearance had stabbed a knife in her heart once again, twisting and turning, making it hurt all over again.

Suddenly, a large rock from the apartment’s landscape crashed through her sliding glass patio door. Adam came through the door frame right behind the rock. Jennifer screamed and rushed for her phone on a nearby credenza, hoping to call 911. Adam was too quick; his forearm slammed into her shoulder, sending her sprawling to the floor.

“Adam, what the hell is wrong with you?” Jennifer asked, eyes wide, lying on her back.

“You are not going to call the police.”

Jennifer stood. “Get out! Right now! I have nothing more to say to you. It’s over between us, so you better accept it.”

Adam quickly strode to Jennifer and grabbed her upper arm tightly. With eyes narrowed, he said, “It is not over. You’re mine, and you belong to me.”

Jennifer jerked her arm, trying to free it from his grasp, but he held it like a vise.

“You’re hurting my arm. Let go of me. I’m not some piece of property. You don’t own me!”

Adam’s hand moved so fast that Jennifer didn’t have time to react, and his palm slapped her face, and she fell backward to the floor. A red print appeared on her cheek where Adam had struck her. Jennifer sat up, her hand resting where his hand hit. Jennifer was afraid now. He had hit her. From the look on his face, he was furious. She had never seen him like this. Adam had never hit her before. She was shocked. He grabbed her arm again and lifted her to a standing position. With her free arm, she tried to punch him in the face, but he blocked it and hit her again. She fell to the floor and started screaming. Adam slapped her again.

“Shut up!”

He stood over her with his fists clenched, glowering at her.

In a third-floor apartment, the voyeur put down the binoculars, picked up a phone, and dialed 911.

“911, what is your emergency?”

“There is a woman in my apartment complex who is getting assaulted by some guy. You need to send the police and an ambulance immediately; he’s beating her up badly. Please hurry!”
